GPS and Paddle Sports

A GPS (Global Positioning System) can come in handy when you are in a canoe or a kayak. If you are traveling through an unfamiliar area, the information this small device provides to you can be very valuable. Since it can use information taken from one of the 24 satellites constantly in orbit around the Earth, a GPS is a handy tool with the ability to accurately indicate your location to within a few feet.

Whether you are using a kayak or a canoe as the means of travel for your outdoor adventure, you will likely want to combine your GPS with a map and a compass in order to plot the best route to take on your journey. The more advanced GPS units now come equipped with mapping software, which is a very nice feature to have. However, it does have its limitations.

If you are out in dense bush, you may not be able to get a GPS signal. (Keep in mind that the satellite must be able to "see" your GPS device to send signals back and forth.) Batteries wear out, and if you don't have any extra ones with you, you may be at a disadvantage.

The best course of action is to pack your GPS along with a map and a compass when you head out on the water. That way, you have the equipment you need, and you are not relying completely on "modern" technology.

Paddle Sports and Waterproof Cases

Even if you have fresh batteries close at hand for your GPS, they won't do you much good if they get wet. The GPS device won't work properly if it is exposed to moisture. This doesn't have to be a problem for you; simply choose one of the waterproof cases available to keep your GPS device safe and dry. You don't even need to remove it from the case when you want to use it; you can access the controls through the waterproof sports case.

Other watertight cases can be used to store your map and your compass. What could be simpler or more convenient than that? All of your navigation tools will be safely stored in their own watertight sports cases, ready for you to use as needed.

Keeping your food and extra clothing dry won't be a problem for you, either. Specialty watertight cases can be used to store these things as well. You can concentrate on enjoying your journey instead of having to deal with the consequences of either of these important items falls into the water.

The whole point of spending time indulging in paddle sports is to enjoy yourself. Both canoeing and kayaking are very quiet, peaceful ways to enjoy the water. You move through the area under your own power and you have time to savor the sights, sounds, and aromas of nature while doing so. Having concerns about the security of your belongings shouldn't get in the way of that, and buying some waterproof sport cases lets you focus on enjoying yourself while you are out paddling.
